UK consultation on due diligence for forest risk commodities
The UK's Department for the Environment, Forestry and Rural Affairs (Defra) has opened a consultation seeking to introduce a due diligence requirement for companies whose supply chains may be contributing to deforestation.
The UK is proposing a law which would require larger businesses to ensure that 'forest risk’ commodities they use – commodities that can cause wide-scale deforestation – have been produced legally. Under the proposal, it would be illegal for such businesses to use forest risk commodities that have not been produced in accordance with relevant local laws, and they would need to undertake due diligence to show that they have taken proportionate action to ensure this is the case.
Further information is available here. The deadline for responses is October 5.
